This question has been circulating a lot in many unrelated circles nowadays.
On Facebook, Alyaa Gad, an Egyptian physician living abroad, was shocked to know that:
the governmental Central Body for Mobilisation and Statistics (CBMS) found that 75,000 divorce cases have been ruled on by Egyptian courts in 2006-2007, the survey found that in 45,000 cases the reason behind the divorce was the Internet.”

Perhaps egyptian women need to take care of themselves much better, in order to elevate themselves to an internationaly-competitive level. They should not view their virginity or their (often hard-line) abstinence ("el3effa") as their only "asset". Now that the egyptian guys can see worldwide girls on cable TV and how they are soft-spoken and how much they invest in their looks/knowledge/career/manners, the competitive market now has the upper hand.
ReplyDeleteAs my wise grandpa said: "A lemon is only expensive in a disgusted town" (el-lamoona leeha se3r fee balad arfaana).
Egyptian guys have a role here. Our male-dominant society is to blame after all. Males need to raise their daughters in a less protective way and need to teach them how to be globally competitive.
It is just doesn't fit into my mind how the internet can be a reason for about %50 of Egyptian divorces. It is either the Egyptian wives got more addicted to Wikipedia and consequently felt that their husbands are intolerably shallow OR Egyptian husbands got more addicted to Cyber Porno and consequently felt their wives are intolerably unsexy.
ReplyDeleteI guess my comment didnt appeal to you
ReplyDeleteHe & She ... sorry my fault .. I did not see it:)
ReplyDeleteInternet is the TV of this generation.
When I was a kid my mom and dad spent hours watching TV everyday in silence .. each one lost in his world and thoughts.
Many other couples did the same thing and the result was .. loss of communication.
Now it is no longer TV .. it is the internet ... chatting with strangers .... speaking the unheard and falling in love with an imaginative man/woman rather than the partner who is no longer a partner at home.
Ahmed:)
ReplyDeletePhysical appearance goes both ways ... you must have heard about the Mohannad phenomena and how Egyptian women are raving about his looks, charm, and romance:)
But you are right ... it IS very competitive now:)
Okay I Know!
ReplyDeletefirst: coz men are not stupid after all :)
well no kidding: think of it like this how many "brake-up" case in the west happen everyday?
hint? a looooooooooooooooooooot
so in Egypt people don't get to -really- know one another until -like any other place in the world- they (live together)! so here they get the first shot after marriage!
Plus people started to know about "individualism" so nobody is really willing to live with someone in the sake of "keep your house alive B.S" or even for the children, you may add that the word "divorced" doesn't sound as bad as it used to be. women are more independent financially than before, a bit more aware of her rights.
second an last: WHY NOT?! what's the big deal of being divorced?

ReplyDelete1-I dont trust the data of any gov. research organizations.. i feel they are part of police-state remains in Egypt.. i feel this pt of view might be redicilous but i strongly believe in!
ReplyDelete2-These terrotizing organizations are making things bigger than they really take.. increase of divorces is not a problem in iteslf, as the increase of marriage age.. making the two latter things a problem is the problem..
many things kept similar between yesterday's society and today's.. the same "tribe" architecture of our agricultural society which can blow any marriage.. and the same choice problem is the same in our fathers' age and in our times.. choice is the core of marriage and it should be responsible.. what mattered today is that today's men and women are more bold to talk about breaking up.. in past generations, divorce was regarded as 3eeeb.. women were adviced by their parents to be more patient until the end giving the defame that sticks with divorced women.. now the picture is utterly changed.. and a lot of families are now led by women in the absence of their hubbies.. so the increase in divorce cases is very natural and statistically expected..
the same applies with the so-called 3noosa problem..
and any "real" researcher fails in my pt of view to generalize a reason for the two problems.. marriage and divorce remain a matter of "esma w naseeb".. a very indvidualistic matter and a function in the man, the woman, and their parents.. as it used to be for centuries..
Certainly i have no "polite" comment regarding the "crap" associated with such statistics, like the effects of video clip models and the so-called Noor series..
sorry for mis-punctuation.. this is internet! :)
