1. At what point did you know you wanted to become a writer?
I have always known that I am more comfortable communicating in written words as opposed to verbal or non verbal communication but the first time I knew that writing for me is more than just self-expression was in March 2005 when my first article was published in Egypt's Insight. Seeing my pain and anger in print made my wounds heal - I never stopped writing since then.
2. I hear you were a bit of a rebel when you were younger. What aspects of Egyptian traditions did you find hard to accept about the equality of sex?
I still am a rebel I am not pro gender equality because it is not possible; men and women were created differently, they function differently, and they can never be equal in that sense. I advocate equality in rights; women are no longer killed at birth but they might as well be considered dead. A little girl is "owned" by her father, brother, uncles, or any male in the family regardless of how competent he is, and she only aspires to become the cherished property of another man she calls husband. Most girls are circumcised physically or mentally or both, they are denied the right to date, choose, make mistakes, learn from their mistakes, grow, and explore their real potential. I realize how close I was to being one of "those" girls!
3. You question the world, yourself, traditions a great deal. Were you brought up by strong minded and influential parents?
No I was brought up in a conservative middle class family that preached the virtue of being a "good girl", the beauty of hypocrisy in the name of decorum, and the 10 commandments of submission, denial, and double standards.
I never understood it, could never accept "the rules", and was miraculously saved when my father immigrated to the US in 1993. I stumbled, fell, got hurt, and died a million times until I finally came to terms with how "odd" I am in 2005.
4. What made you decide to suddenly speak up? Can you take us through the steps from being a shy girl to a confident speaker?
It hurt too much; being different tore me to pieces. I used to consciously stop any line of thoughts because I did not know where the thoughts came from. I was not sure if I was insane or possessed. I kept bottling in those "weird thoughts" and "forbidden questions" until I could no longer take it. That was when Jenny was born. I was too weak, too scared, and too intimidated to allow Marwa to be.
Jenny gave me the voice that I lacked, the confidence that I craved, and the sanity that I almost lost trying to fit in a sick society. In January 2007 Marwa embraced Jenny and we became one. Suddenly I no longer cared who thought what of my ideas. I am who I am and I am true to myself. I do not lie, cheat, fake, or pretend to be someone that I am not. I realized that I do not need to fit in and that I enjoy the company of my cats more than being around people who made me sick with their games and manipulation. Surprisingly enough, when I accepted who I am people accepted me and I began attracting people who think like me.

EGYPT'S CENTRAL BANK LOWERS INTEREST RATES
The Central Bank of Egypt (link here) lowered its overnight deposit rate by 50 basis points to 10%. In February, the central bank had reduced the base rate by 100 basis points from 11.5%. The central bank also lowered the overnight lending rate by 50 basis points to 12% and the discount rate to 10% .............. Not sure how I feel about this one!! Scam?!! There has to be a trick
SUEZ CANAL REVENUES DECLINE 26% IN FEBRUARY
Egypt's Suez Canal revenues dipped 26% to $301.8 million in February, compared to $407.7 million in February 2008 and also down from $332.4 million in January, the Suez Canal Authority said .... Do you think Piracy has to do anything with this?
TAXI OWNERS SEEK LOANS TO RENEW VEHICLES
Egyptian banks received 5,000 requests from taxi owners for loans to renew their taxis. The loans will bear a fixed interest rate of 6.25%. Advertising companies will be paying LE416/month per taxi in return for taxi owners putting advertisements on their taxis, reducing the monthly installment to a range of LE590-1,435 .......... My heart goes out to the taxi drivers who will be in debt probably for the next 5 years (heavy debt) ... hope they learn to maintnaice their new cars.
TE PLAN TO INCREASE INTERNET SEGMENT
Telecom Egypt (AmCham member) (link here) Chairman Akil Beshir said the company plans to increase the internet segment contribution to total revenues from 5% last year to 10%. Meanwhile, Beshir expects subscribers’ net addition to range between 100,000 and 200,000 subscribers in fiscal year 2009 .... yeah and then they censor it .. so people are left with emails and a few sites to keep them company
MINISTRY PROPOSES FREE-MARKET ELECTRICITY PLAN
Egypt's Ministry of Electricty and Energy (link here) has set out a plan to allow the private sector to provide electricity, slowly shifting towards a free-market electricity scheme. This significantly changes the landscape in the electricity sector ... why does this sound like bad news?
PRIME MINISTER APPROVES LE8 BILLION MEDICAL CITY IN HELWAN
Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif approved the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with British investors to set up the largest Medical City in the Middle East over an area of 500 feddans at a total cost of LE8 billion in Helwan. Helwan Governor Hazem al-Quweidi signed the memorandum and said that the Medical City falls within the development strategy prepared by the governorate .... emmmm words like largest and biggest and development no longer do it for me
PLANS TO DEVELOP A NEW TERMINAL IN HURGHADA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is planning to develop a new passenger terminal in Hurghada International Airport next June, said the General Manger of the Hurghada International Airport .... again?!!!! I have been adding that line to my marketing plans since 2001

Egyptian exports to France have increased in 2008 by 22.9% to hit 926 million euros. According to official French statistics, petroleum exports to France out of the total figure hit 470 million euros while non-petroleum exports hit 456 million euros ... I was hoping it would have been anything but petroleum

VEHICLE SALES FALL 37% IN FEBRUARY
Total vehicle sales in Egypt fell 37% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to 13,148 units in February 2009, according to the Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC). The decline was softer than the 50% Y-o-Y plunge of January 2009. On monthly basis, total sales were up 22%. This brings 2M2009 total vehicle sales down 44% Y-o-Y, with passenger car sales down 47% Y-o-Y and commercial vehicle sales (buses and trucks) down 34% Y-o-Y ... Every year they say something about cars becoming cheaper ... and I wait .. and wait .. and wait ...
ITALY & EGYPT INK DEAL TO UPGRADE EGYPTIAN RAILWAYS
Egypt and Italy signed a deal to fund the development of the Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA). The deal was signed in Cairo by Egyptian Transport Minister, Mohammed Lotfi Mansour, and the Italian Minister for Infrastructure ... a bubble? could it be one? Cyprus hospitality company Louis Plc said it will manage a five-star Louis Tiran Sharm hotel, which is set to open in Egypt in June. The 346-room property, on a private 1,500 meter stretch of Sharm El Sheikh's coast, is owned by Egyptian firm Tower Group. Egypt's most popular Red Sea tourist resort, Sharm El Sheikh attracts a high percentage of European visitors all year round .... Cyprus? Sharm El Sheikh ... very very smart move ... Cypriots love Sharm ... I am not kidding you ... short flight .. sun .. fun ... beaches .. and cheap .. great!

I am proud of our president for not giving in to ignorant pressure … I admire his courage in facing all the rage and blows aimed at him by emotional masses of Egyptians and Arabs … I am happy he did not open the Rafa7 crossings … I am happy he said that he would only allow the wounded … I am glad that he is not dragging us into a war that is not ours … I am glad that he could see through the hidden agendas of Hamas, Fatah, and Israel … These three parties are the ones who are using civilians as live targets in their own dirty wars .. Yes .. I am proud of Hosny Mubarak.

We are first class complainers since the 1920s onwards. We are eternally against our government/s be it royal or republican. This makes me pause: is it really just the government or are we in great part responsible for our own predicaments? corruption is not governmental level only but deeply seated in the roots of our daily lives and daily intearction.
The butcher who sells bad meat or donkey meat, the parmachist who cheats on a medication or raises its price, the guy at the Fuel station who cheats on the liters or change of money and so on. The change has to be from the people themselves. To care more , to be more responsible.
You can't increase the economy of a country, if its people are not willing to work on the production! what is our percentage of actual daily production? I am talking of PEOPLE not government.
And to tell you the truth, I know the majority are against Nazif but has ever one recalled any of his achivements and accomplishments particularly in the field of IT (after being PM not just Minister of IT). None. We never recall any positive points no matter how big and we never stop complaining about any passive or negative point no matter how minimal. We also never offer VIABLE solutions. Solid, practical and possible to implement solutions not just the usual standard big words.

لكن صحيح ازاى ما هما دول نفس الناس اللى مش مؤمنة بالعمل و النجاح و المثابرة و هما دول نفس الناس اللى تهبط عزيمة بلد و هما نفسهم اللى مؤمنين ان كل واحد ناجح يبقى محظوظ و لا واسطة ولا كوسة و لا مولود بمعلقة دهب فى بقه ... هما نفس الناس اللى بتعمل اسقاط لفشلها الشخصى على كل حاجة عدلة

طبعا الناس السودا الكئيبة مش ممكن يخطر فى بالهم ان انا زى ما انتقلت من السياحة الى التدريب و التدريس و الكتابة ممكن اكون باعمل نقلة تانية تجاه الاعلام .. و مش ممكن يفكروا ان انا زى اى واحد عارف هو عايز ايه بقالى شهرين مبطلة شغل التدريب و مركزة فى الفيسبوك و الجروبس بتاعتى و السايت بتاعى و انى دورت على حلقاتى القديمة و نزلتها على السايت بتاعى .. من الآخر استخدمت تكنيك التذكير و نعنشة الذاكرة بتاع التسويق

لكن صحيح ازاى ما هما دول نفس الناس اللى مش مؤمنة بالعمل و النجاح و المثابرة و هما دول نفس الناس اللى تهبط عزيمة بلد و هما نفسهم اللى مؤمنين ان كل واحد ناجح يبقى محظوظ و لا واسطة ولا كوسة و لا مولود بمعلقة دهب فى بقه ... هما نفس الناس اللى بتعمل اسقاط لفشلها الشخصى على كل حاجة عدلة

Suez Canal donates 1,000,000 Egyptian Pounds to Doweika Victims
Like Asser Mattar, many Egyptians were happy to find out that Suez Canal canceled its annual celebration on September 14 to donate a total of one million Egyptian Pounds to support the victims of the Doweika tragedy. Scores of people were killed and injured when huge rocks fell on 35 homes in the slum in one of Cairo's poorest neighbourhoods.

One of the main headlines that I read on a monthly basis is that the revenues of
Suez Canal broke a new record. Yes, it happened on a monthly basis for at least
the whole past year. The revenues never decrease, and the Suez Canal tolls for
those of you who don't know are collected in US dollars, which is equal nowadays
to approximately 5.4 Egyptian pounds.
After the Doweika catastrophe,

Fuck Offff!!!!!!
Who? A man!
Do I know him? No!
Then why?
Today, I got a call from this guy who happens to have a problem and who needed advice. I am usually very tolerant but today it took me a lot of self control not to butcher his life as we spoke. I am serious ... I have not been that enraged in a very ... very .. long time!
He was engaged ... they broke up ... she got engaged ... he cannot believe it ... she is over him .. he cannot move on.
Fine! What's new then?
The details ... I will just summarize the points here - and this is not my opinion of him, this is what he told me:
1) For x number of years, she loved him, took care of him, listened to him, absorbed his anger fits, patched his ego, and forgave all his mistakes ....................... AND HE DID NOTHING BUT RECEIVE HER LOVE AND MAKE HER FEEL LIKE A PIECE OF SHIT!
2) He slept with her to make sure she was no longer pure and that she would never leave him
3) He chose her because she would make an ideal wife and mother; she worshipped him, had no previous experience, and does not have any requests
4) Whenever they had a fight, she was the one who put in all the effort to win him back .. even if it was not her fault
One day .... she left ... what does he do?
1) Call her mom and tell her that he does not want to marry her daughter because he loved her; he wants to "fix the mistake" because they were together like man and wife
2) After shocking the mother ... he called the father and told him the same thing
When I asked him why he did that .... he said he wanted to use them as pressure points on the girl and force her to marry him!!!
When that did not work he sent her in writing that she is his and that she will never belong to anyone else .. he threatened to maim her by cutting off her ring finger, her whole arm, or disfiguring her
When her dad called his dad ... he insulted her dad and called him names for the whore-of-a-girl he has
She got engaged a month after they broke up ...
He turned to God .... and promised him to pray, to force her to get veiled, to raise good muslim kids, only if He give him a second chance with her!!!
He came to me because .... he wants her back, cannot trust women any more (after what his pure angel did), and he wants my advice on how to fix it!!
