Book publishing in Egypt: ‘The system here doesn't follow any system'

CAIRO: The Frankfurt Book Fair opened last week, with representation from Egyptian publishers. But participants and book traders interested in getting a handle on the volume of book sales in Egypt will be disappointed by the fair's website page on Egypt.

"There is no separate compilation or entry for the book trade in the statistics for industrial production and domestic trade put together by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) in Cairo," the website reads.

"For its part, the Egyptian Publishers' Association does not record any data either."

As Daily News Egypt discovered, the absence of these statistics speaks volumes about the nature of the industry itself, and the often haphazard journey that manuscripts take before they become books.

This journey at certain points bears little resemblance to the publishing process used elsewhere, where agents and publishers take charge of the process.

Only one established literary agent (the Sphinx Agency) exists in Egypt, meaning that authors must approach and negotiate with publishing houses directly. Some publishing houses demand money from authors to publish. Others pay them in copies of books rather than a percentage. Publishing houses sometimes leave distribution and marketing of books to authors themselves.

Is it a system that works? Ramy Habeeb, co-founder of Kotob Arabia, the first Arabic e-bookstore, has some startling figures.

Distribution blunders

Kotob Arabia did a study on distribution which involved looking at 150 titles by Egyptian authors.

The study discovered that the top 10 percent of the sample - published along conventional distribution outlets in Egypt - was easily findable. The bottom 10 percent - works by authors who only have one title or don't have an aggressive publishing house backing them - was only available on the publisher's shelves or from the authors themselves.

Meanwhile, the middle 80 percent was only available within a 5 km radius of the publishing house - "so that basically meant where the publishers could physically carry the books themselves," Habeeb explained.

"You can imagine what this means for the industry if a book published by a downtown Cairo publisher isn't even available in bookshops in [the Cairo area of] Nasr City, let alone Alexandria or another Arab country," Habeeb added.

Habeeb joked that sometimes he thinks the book industry should be "surrendered to the Azbekeyya booksellers" - specialist second-hand booksellers in Cairo's Azbekeyya area whose extensive network of contacts means that they can get their hands on just about any book. "They'd figure something out," Habeeb said.

Habeeb attributes the failure to adequately distribute books to the fact that publishers who rely on the annual Cairo International Book Fair for the bulk of their incomes don't have "an understanding of the incentives" for wider distribution, adding that "the case for book sales needs to be made."

For authors, this can translate into their doing most of the legwork to promote and sell their work.

First-time author Marwa Rakha published her book, "The Poison Tree - Planted & Grown in Egypt," with Cairo publishing house Malamih.

"I didn't expect distribution to be that bad," Rakha said. "I ended up with 500 copies in the trunk of my car driving around Cairo, handing them over to bookstores."

Karam Youssef, owner of independent bookstore Kotob Khan says that distribution by authors themselves "is the norm."

"Authors bring me their books or they call me and tell me, ‘my book will be published by this publishing house, please make sure you have it'. This is the norm. It's a pity."

Writers are also vulnerable in other ways such as royalty percentages and payments, rights disputes when their work is bought by international publishers, and contractual issues.

Ahmed Ramadan, another writer who signed with Malamih, says that he has doubts that his collection of short stories, "Aria," was ever published. "I think he [Malimih manager Mohamed El-Sharqawy] only published 50 copies to shut me up," Ramadan said. "There aren't any copies of the book in bookstores."

El-Sharqawy declined to comment on the allegations made by Ramadan and Rakha. However, in what may or may not be a coincidence, Youssef says that copies of several Malimih titles, including "Aria," were delivered to Kotob Khan this week, only a few days after Daily News Egypt spoke to El-Sharqawy.

Make-shift system

Why are writers' agents - with the potential to protect authors' rights - distinctly absent from the Egyptian publishing process?

Habeeb suggests that their absence means "that they don't work. If there was money to be made by a middleman connecting authors to publishers it would exist in some form or another."

Youssef is even more blunt. "Agents are too advanced. The system here doesn't follow any system - for publishing, for anything. ... The issue is we don't take things seriously."

Youssef says that Egyptian publishers "should invest more time, more effort, in getting books to sales points."

She pointed to the difference between international publishers, who "always keep you updated with new releases" and their Egyptian counterparts, "very few" of whom "care about updating you with their new releases."

Dalia Ibrahim, vice president of Nahdet Misr, the largest private-sector printing house in the Arab world, says that marketing and promotion of their titles through book-signing events and launches has been stepped-up in the past nine months. "In past years we used to do three or four events in a year. We have three events planned for next month."

Ibrahim maintains that a shortage of bookstores remains central to the distribution problem. "There are increasing numbers of stores like Diwan and Shorouk and so on but there are no megastores like Saudi Arabia's Jareer. A publisher like me who publishes around 400 new titles per year ... nobody can absorb all this."

Khaled Abbas, general manager of the Sphinx literary agency, estimates that there are only around 200 bookstores in Egypt, with some 300-400 pavement booksellers. He identifies three factors as undermining the publishing process in Egypt: an inadequate number of sales outlets, the virtual non-existence of wholesalers and "the old values of monopoly, of controlling everything" espoused by the big publishing houses.

In practice, Youssef says, these values, combined with the economic realities of the business, mean that big publishing houses "set the rules" for small bookstores like Kotob Khan. She says that some big Egyptian publishing houses have recently started making bookstores pay up front for best-selling titles, and criticized the effect that this focus on profit has for her ability to stock a wider-range of titles.

The database

Habeeb is adamant that the lack of a central database to store and track what he estimates is 12,000-16,000 new titles issued yearly by Egyptian publishing houses is at the core of the distribution problem.

Habeeb believes that the International Standard Book Number (ISBN), what he describes as "the lynchpin of the Western publishing industry," is key.

While it is used, the ISBN is not used as consistently in Egypt as in the West.

"I'll have debates with people on this and they'll say you need to get Arabs more interested in reading, or you need to improve the education system, or you need to give better incentives to authors or whatever ... All of these points are valid but if you want one coherent most effective step forward, it would be the database.

"Why in a market of 300 million people do we not have Amazon? ... We have a huge market with good spending power but these Western giants aren't entering the region in large part because there's no way they can measure sales."

A single database would encourage publishers abroad to purchase subsidiary rights to Egyptian titles, Habeeb says, because, "why would a Jordanian publisher buy the subsidiary rights to a book in Egypt without having some kind of sales data to know how the book is doing?"

Abbas attributes the absence of the ISBN to two factors; a "lack of knowledge" on the part of publishers and the fact that publishing houses must be registered businesses to acquire ISBNs: registration requires the approval of Egypt's state security investigation apparatus, empowered to interfere in almost every area of public life under the state of emergency in force for the last 28 years.

This process - which Abbas says can take several years - applies to all publishers regardless of the innocuousness of the titles they plan to publish. "It doesn't matter," Abbas says. "Books, newspapers, whatever. You are a publisher. You are dangerous."

After she discovered that people who wanted to buy her book couldn't find it in bookstores, Rakha decided to solve the problem by circumventing publishers altogether.

Earlier this year she launched her "Who Needs Publishers When They have Friends" campaign and put her book in PDF format on her website for free download. More than 5,000 copies of the book were downloaded in a month.

Other authors soon followed suit, including Ramadan, who was threatened with legal action for breach of contract by El-Sharqawy. Ramadan, who is currently working on a novel, says that he will be "very careful" the next time he seeks out a publisher in Egypt and may try to publish abroad directly, so disillusioned is he by his experiences. Rakha agrees. "The business is just bad."

فى السبت الماضى بدأنا تحقيق صحفى عن حملة الكاتبة مروة رخا (إنهم لا يحترمون الكتاب)، تلك الحملة التى بدأت بتضامن مجموعة من شباب الكُتاب لا يتعدى عددهم الخمسة أفراد. نشرنا بشئ من التفصيل أسبابهم و دوافعهم للتضامن مع تلك الحملة ... و حيثياتهم فى توجههم للنشر الإلكترونى عوضا عن النشر الورقى. و بمرور الوقت إستطاعت الحملة جذب عدد أكبر من الكتاب وصل لخمسة عشر كاتب، وكان من المفترض نشر تصريحاتهم فى هذا العدد لكن ما حدث من قبل بعض دور النشر جعلنا نرجىء نشر تصريحات باقى الكتاب المتضامنون مع الحملة ... و ذلك حتى أستطيع تقديم، عزيزى القارئ، ما بلغنى من دور النشر.

أبدأ أولا بالبطل الهمام صاحب و مدير دار نشر، و الملهم الحقيقى لهذة الحملة، الأستاذ الفاضل محمد الشرقاوى و المعروف عنه شغبه السياسى ... و أنه أحد المقبوض عليهم فى أحداث 6 ابريل قبل الماضى، ناهيك عن خروجه المتكرر فى مختلف مظاهرات انتخابات الرئاسة. وهو أيضا من وقّع الشيك المضروب، و الذى نشرنا صورته السبت الماضى. و إحقاقا للحق حرصت على الإتصال بشرقاوى شخصيا لعله يستطيع الدفاع عن نفسه.. كم كنت أتمنى أن يقول و لو كلمة واحدة تبرر موقفه المخزى تبرر موقفه ... لكنه آثر الهروب بمجرد معرفته أسباب الاتصال، فلم أسمع إلا تيت تيت تيت !! و عند اعادة محاولة الاتصال كان الهاتف قد تم اغلاقه، و حتى الان لم يفتح هاتفه بعد ! يمكن يكون وقع منه فى الترعة اللى جنب بيتهم .. هى أكيد الترعة

لأن الشرفاء لا ينتهون فى هذا العالم و إلا لكان على الدنيا السلام ... أعلن ثلاثة من أصحاب دور النشر رفضهم التام و إستنكارهم لموقف الشرقاوى. بل و أيضا إعلانهم عن تضامنهم مع حملة (إنهم لا يحترمون الكتاب) و هؤلاء الناشرون هم:

ا/ هبة سلامه، وا/ وائل الملا، و ا/ شريف بكر. (أسماء دور النشر الثلاثه نحتفظ بها لتلافى شبهة الدعايه، و لكنها تحت امر اى كاتب شاب يقتنع بموقفهم).

تخبرنى هبة سلامه فى بداية حوارى معها عن الصعوبات التى تواجه الناشر، و كيف أن هناك من الكتاب من عانت معهم أشد المعاناه ... و ذكرت لى تحديدا تجربتها المريرة مع الشاعرة إيمان بكرى، و التى لم ترغب فى ذكر أية تفاصيل أكثر من أنها كانت تجربة مريرة. و إحتراما لرغبتها فى عدم الصفح عن تفاصيل تلك التجربة لم أضغط عليها لمعرفة تلك التفاصيل فما يعنينى فى المقام الأول هو كيف ستتضامن هبه سلامه بشكل عملى مع الحملة ... ففجأتنى بأنها على أتم إستعداد لنشر أي كتاب شرط موافقة لجنة القراءة بدار النشر الخاصه بها ... و إلا سيتحمل الكاتب تكلفة النشر مع حفظ جميع حقوق الكاتب و ضمان عدم التخلى عنه أو النصب عليه كما حدث من قبل بعض دور النشر الأخرى.

و بتضامن الإستاذة هبه سلامه يتضامن الاستاذ وائل الملا و الذى بدوره بعث لى برسالة طويلة جدا يستنكر فيها موقف دور النشر الغير شريفة، و يخبرنى باستعداده عن تقديم يد العون و المساعده لكل كاتب إن كان يستحق ... و هو لذلك آثر الكلام العملى بدلا من الكلام المرسل الذى لا طائل من ورائه فأرسل إلينا رسالة أخرى تضمن خطوات عملية النشر ... لقراءة الرسالة إضغط : جزء أول - جزء ثاني

و لظروف سفر الاستاذ شريف بكر لحضور مهرجان فرانكفورت، إستطاع فقط إبلاغنا بتضامنه هاتفيا مع وعد بتحديد كيفية التضامن فور عودته.

السبت القادم سأوالى نشر مآسى شباب الكتاب المتضررين من التعامل مع دور النشر ... كما سأحاور مرة ثانية الكاتبة مروة رخا للوقوف على أخر تداعيات حملة (إنهم لا يحترمون الكتاب).

اتفق و بشدة مع هذه العبارة البلهاء، لكن مش معنى إنى مش هاقدر أصلح إنى أعيش عمرى كله أتسك على قفايا .. و ليه إفتراض العجز ده من البداية؟! و ليه اساسا أصلح لوحدى لما ممكن نصلح كلنا، و هذا هو أساس عمل الحملات المنوط بها تغيير واقعنا القذر ...

و لأن الكتاب بالذات ما ينفعش نتعامل معاه زيه زى أى سلعة تانية كان هذا التحقيق ...

بدأت حملة "إنهم لايحترمون الكتاب" منذ حوالى الشهرين بدأتها مروة رخا بإعلانها مقاطعة دور النشر و النشر الورقى و تحولها لنشر كامل كتابها إلكترونيا على مدونتها Egyptian Fe-Mail. و بمرور الوقت انضم إليها و تضامن معاها عدد من الكتاب الذين وجدوا ضالتهم لنشر أعمالهم بعد أن عانوا شديد المعاناة مع دور النشر ... كتاب مثل: زينة مدحت و إبراهيم المحلاوى و ايمن شوقى و يا سمين مدكور و طارق رفعت ...

تحدثنى زينة مدحت مؤلفة "المعشوقة السوداء" و "مرايا على الطريق" فى البداية عن تجربة النشر الإلكترونى قائلة:

"بعد الكثير من وعود أصحاب دور النشر التى لم تنفذ، أصبت بحالة من الإحباط جعلتنى ألجأ لمدونة مروة رخا لأنشر من خلالها. و ذلك بعد أن رأيت الفرصة متاحة أمامى لنشر كتابى... و الحمد لله الكتاب أتنشر و الناس قرأته و عدد مرات التحميل فاق توقعاتى".

إبراهيم المحلاوى مؤلف "قمر العشق الإلهى" قال:

"أنا من سنة و انا مستنى رد دار النشر، و رغم موافقتى على تحمل تكلفة الطباعة إلا أنهم لم يعيرونى أى إهتمام. فقررت النشر إلكترونيا من خلال مدونة مروة رخا. فلا توجد شروط للنشر الإلكترونى و لا أى تحفظات ... إستبداد دور النشر هو أكثر ما شجعنى لاتخاذ هذة الخطوة".

أما أيمن شوقى مؤلف "أهداب الخيانة" و "مرآة الضياع" فقد فاجأنى بتصريحه: "انا نشرت أول كتاب إلكترونيا منذ عام تقريبا، و أعيد تكرار التجربة من خلال مروة رخا. و سأعيدها حتى تظهر دار نشر مصرية محترمة تحترم القارئ أولا و تقدر الموهبة الإبداعية ثانيا. و أنا الآن فى طريقى لتكوين مكتبة إلكترونية كاملة من خلال مجلة قلادة التى أتولى رئاسة تحريرها".

"إذا كانت دور النشر بتتعامل مع الكتاب الكبار و المعروفين بمنتهى الصفاقة هايعملوا معايا انا إيه؟!! شوف ايه اللى حصل مع مروة رخا و خالد الصاوى و مصطفى فتحى ... أنا لو عشان أنشر ورقيا من خلال دور نشر هاتعرض لإهانة يبقى بناقص و أهلا بالنشر الإلكترونى" ... ياسمين مدكور مؤلفة "كى لا أراك".

طارق رفعت مؤلف "للماضى لون آخر" يقول: "أنا مش هاتكلم ... أنا هاسيب الصورة تتكلم. ده شيك من غير رصيد من محمد الشرقاوى صاحب و مدير دار ملامح للنشر، و اللى دوخنى السبع دوخات عشان ينشرلى كتابى.
و بعد ما أخد فلوسى ماطلنى سنة كاملة عشان يرجعها لأنه مانشرش. و أخرتها شيك بدون رصيد. أنا كنت ممكن أرفع الشيك، بس مش هارفعه و هافضحه فى كل حته بالشيك ده عشان الناس تعرف مين هو محمد الشرقاوى. و على فكرة ما يهمنيش انه يتسجن هو أصلا أتعود ع السجون و السجن بالنسباله فسحه، انما انا هاسجنه جوه بيتهم لما الناس كلها تعرف حقيقته".

انتهى حديثى مع أول خمسة كتاب متضامنين مع حملة "إنهم لا يحترمون الكتاب"، و أنتقل بعدها لهذا الحوار مع مروة رخا صاحبة فكرة الحملة و المتضامن الأول.

ليه عملتى الحمله دى عايز اسباب مباشرة و اسباب غير مباشرة؟

الاسباب المباشرة إن كتابى نفذ من السوق من شهر مايو اللى فات، و المكتبات بتكلمنى شخصيا تسألنى لو عندى كتب فى البيت. و القراء بيبعتولى على الجروب و الموقع بيشتكوا ان الكتاب مش موجود. و شرقاوى الناشر بيسوّف و كل يوم بحجة لما اتخنقت .... و الحل يا أقبل زى اللى بيقبلوا يا اتصرف ... و اتصرفت.

الأسباب الغير مباشرة إنى انا ليا أصدقاء و صديقات حلمهم النشر الورقى، و شافوا ايام سودا و معاملة الخدم من دور النشر ... اللى يقولوا ادفعوا 2000 و 3000 و 4000 جنيه و اللى يقولوا كمان سنة و اللى يوعد بتوزيع بره و جوة. و الكاتب فى الاخر بياخد الكتب يتدفى بيها فى الشتا، و طبعا بقى التسويق و صناعة البيست سيلير ... دى علوم المطبعجى اللى مسمى نفسه ناشر ما سمعش عنها.

انا بكره الظلم و الافتراء و التحكمات الفارغة ... و مؤمنة ايمان تام بان الانسان مخير و ماسورة الاختيارات عمرها ما بتتسد.

طب ازاى قدرتى تقنعى مجموعة الكتاب اللى تضامنوا معاكى بانهم كمان ينزلوا كتبهم ع النت؟

انا ما أقنعتش حد ... انا حطيت كتابى و هحط كل كتبى، و كل اللى عنده صوت انا باقدمله ميكريفون.

لو انتى صاحبة دار نشر هاتعاملى الكتاب ازاى؟

انا مش عايزة ابقى صاحبة دار نشر ... اللى مساعدنى فى النشر الالكترونى انى مش متحملة اى تكلفة، فحتى لو الكاتب عامل نص زى الزفت مش انا اللى هاحكم ... انا هاحطه على الموقع و القارئ هو اللى يحكم.

انا سئلت صاحب دار نشر قالى احنا بنخسر، و اتخن كتاب ما بيلمش نص تكلفته. وكفايه انهم بيبقوا كُتاب على قفانا و يطلعوا فى البرامج و ياخدوا فلوس اضعاف اللى اى ناشر بيكسبها ... تعليقك ايه على الكلام ده؟

كلام فاضى و ان دل على شئ يدل على ان الناشر دا مجرد مطبعجى.

اولا: الكتاب مش بيبيع علشان حلو و عظيم ... الكتاب بيبيع علشان الناس سمعت عنه، و الناس اللى انا باتكلم عنهم هنا مش مجموعة "المثقفين" انا باتكلم عن الناس العادية ... اهلى و اهلك و اصحابى و اصحابك و طلبة الجامعة و المدارس كمان .... دول مش هيشتروا كتاب علشان رجليهم واخدة على المكتبات ... دول ناس عقليتهم استهلاكية و الكتب لازم تتسوق لهم تسويق المنتج الاستهلاكى.

ثانياً: موضوع بقى الفلوس بتاعة البرامج دى .. دى نكتة، و ان دلت على شئ فهى تدل ان الناشر دا مش عارف هو بيتكلم فى ايه. لأن نادراً ما قناة أو برنامج بيدفعوا فلوس لضيف من منطلق إن مجرد إستضافة كاتب بيعد شرف و تكريم و شهرة يجب أن يدفع هو أو هى من أجلها و ليس العكس، مش بقول لك مش عارفين حاجة الناس دول ... دول مجرد مطبعجية.

مش خايفة الحملة دى توقع بينك و بين اصحاب دور النشر، اما يعرفوا انك لبط و بتاعة مشاكل و بتقومى الدنيا عليهم؟ من الاخر الحملة دى مش ممكن تأذيكى فى مستقبلك ككاتبة يادوب لسه بتشق طريقها؟

أنا لو كان ده مبدأ من مبادئى كان زمانى ماشية جنب الحيط فى شركة البترول اللى اشتغلت فيها تليفونيست اول لما اتخرجت فى 1996 و كان زمانى لسة هناك ... دار النشر اللى هتخاف تتعامل معايا علشان انا حقانية و لبط تبقى دار بيتها من زجاج و ناوية تغلط ... يبقى بركة ان جات منهم.

تحبى تضيفى حاجة تانية..

الاضافة الوحيدة انى انا فعلا غاضبة على دور النشر، لكن انا غاضبة من الكتاب اضعاف اضعاف غضبى من دور النشر ... هم صورة مصغرة من المواطن المصرى السلبى اللى ما عندوش كرامة و لا نزاهة و لا عزة نفس ... مواطن مافيش على لسانه غير و انا مالى ... لا له رأى و لا موقف و خايف .... خايف من كل حاجة.

و بعدين دور الكاتب اللى بيكتب و بعد كدة يعمل ميت دا بطل من زمان .... الكاتب عامل زى الام و لا الاب اللى بيجروا على عيالهم علشان يدخلوهم احسن مدارس و يلبسوهم احسن لبس و يجوزوهم احسن جوازات.

سنتهى حوارى مع مروة رخا لأجد نفسى مردداً: ما أجمل أن يكون لإمرأة دوراً محترماً لخدمة قضية محترمة.

بحكم ظُروف نشأتي وخَلفيتي الْعَائلية الْدِينية الْواثقة من مُسلمَاتها الفكرية والسّيَاسية، فقد انشغلت لفترة بمفهوم الْحَقيقة. هل وصلت لشيء ما؟ ربما. لكن ما أدركه على نحو واضح أنه يوماً ما لم يكن لى هدف لا الْحقيقة أو غيرها، وإن كان هذا لا يَنفي أنى بالفعل جبت أهدَاف كتير.

لهذا كان هذا النص، الذي لا أرغب أن يكون مُجرد أطروحة مُضَادة على أفكار آخري قد يرد ذكرها في الْمتنِ، أو مُقَاربة تَحلِيلية لمشروع أحمد مكي. بل هو دفتر مُلاحظات يَضم مَجمُوعة من الظّنون التي تصَادف أنها تَتشابك إلى حد كبير مع ما قدمه أحمد مكي في مَسيرته الْفنية الْقصيرة. طَرحي لهذه الْمُلاحظات/ الدّروس هَدفه في المقَامِ الأول ربما يكون تَقديم رؤية مُغَايرة لمعَاني "الحقيقة"،"القيمة"، وأخيراً وليس آخراً "العمق".

لا أدعى أن هذا الطّرح على جَانب كبير من الْصواب، كما لا أظن أن كل ما فيه يقع تحت خَانة الخطأ، ولهذا يأتي السبب الثاني من وراء نشر هذه الدروس وهو خَلق نوع من الجدل مَوضوعه الأسَاسي أحمد مكي، وإن كان من الممكن أن يتسع لما هو أكثر من ذلك.

ولا أظن أنني في حَاجةِ إلى إيضاح أن العنوان الذي اخترته لهذا النص رغم مَظهره التربوي إلا أنه لم يقصد به إلا تَحقيق نوع من السخريةِ من فَكرة الدّرس والرقم 7ذاته، بالإضَافةِ إلى ما يَحمله من تجَانس أو مُعَارضة ما مع نص آخر لحسن خان"9دروس مستقاة من شريف العظمة". ورغم كل ما سبق فإن طموحي الحقيقي هو أن أري هذا -النص- الشيء لا يكاد يري بين أشياء ونصوص آخري، أريده أن يُنسخ من جديد سواء من قبلي أو من قبل غيري، أن يتكرر ويُحاكى ويَنشطر ويَتشذي ويختفي دون أن تكون للذي أنتجه فُرصة الإعلان عن نفسه مَالكاً للنص أو مُنتجاً له. أريده فقط أن يَفرض ما كان يود قوله. باختصار لا أريد لهذه الْمجمُوعة من الدروس أن تَطرح نَفسها بصفتها نَصاً يَتحرك ضمن الْمدار العَادي للتدوين والنَّقد والْمعرفة، بل يجب أن يكون له الجرأة في الظهور إلى الآخرين والْوجود باعتباره خطَاباً.. مَعركة وسلاحاً في الوقت ذاته، إستراتيجية وهزة، صرَاعاً وجائزة أو جرحاً ودواء، صُدفة أو أثراً لماضي، لقاء غير مُنتظم ومَشهداً مُعَاداً.

Frankly it's a micacle I write. Born a dyslexic I had to be a dunce at school, and I was. Persistence, and a little voice within told me I could learn just as well at the school of hard knocks, and I did.

What you'll read in my writing is a gaggle of experiences, love, lust, hurt and pain. My loathing of war, especially the miserable bastards who promote and profit by it.

Also a life-long support for the not so fortunate with whom I relate. If you find a spelling mistake or two, that's the way flip flops.
