"Supporting Citizen Journalism in Egypt" is a new project co-sponsored by the Regional Office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (FNRF) in Cairo in cooperation with Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the support of the Rights & Democracy organization of Canada.
Citizen journalism – or publications of texts, videos or audio via the Internet by anyone who is capable of using these technical means - has become an important tool for self-expression and sharing uncensored information. This project aims at strengthening this new media by training bloggers (and those who aspire to become bloggers) and providing them with important and state of the art information. The project also aims at establishing and strengthening the cooperation between journalists working in the traditional media and bloggers.
The Foundation plans to organize together with her partners a series of educative activities in Egypt: Among these are workshops at which experts will teach the various aspects of blogging and help participants set up their own online-media. Prominent Egyptian bloggers have joined hands to write a hands-on manual that will provide information and tips and tricks regarding the various issues of blogging and citizen journalism in an Egyptian context. Finally, an international workshop will be held at which a selected number of Egyptian bloggers will be invited to exchange opinions and experiences with their colleagues from other Arab countries.
At this stage, we wish to invite Egyptian journalists and bloggers to apply for the first series of workshops. Successful applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in the topic. Applicants should posses a blog (or another online publication) or have a proven track record in traditional journalism. We encourage applications from outside Cairo. Please note that applicants should be under the age of 35.
The application form should be filled and then sent to Sara.Abdel-Ghany@fnst.org.The deadline for receiving the applications is on the 20th of June, 2010. Applications sent after this date will not be considered.
