No revolution for Egyptian women - Marwa Rakha

No revolution for Egyptian women - Marwa Rakha

Now the revolution is over and everything is back to normal. Attitudes towards women have not been affected by the historic victory. After the revolution, how many girls decided to move out of their family homes and become fully independent? How many abused women ‘revolted’ against their abusive/negligent husbands? How many more women decided to pursue further education? How many additional women decided to join the workforce? How many men were able to link their personal revolution against a dictator in power and a potential revolution at home from their wives?

As a rape and sexual abuse counsellor moving to Luxor next month I can see exactly why there is no revolution for women...yet. There is so much to be healed, both in men and women. Beliefs that have existed for centuries, mixed with religion, tradition etc take a long time to see and work through. In the 'West' it has taken over 100 years to get to the freedoms we have as women, but we are still not free. Over the last 100 years we have moved from being 'angels', under the control of men and 'God', to being whores, still under the control of men, but God as 'media'.It has gone from one extreme to another. But on another level we have become more aware of the abuse that has existed all along, hidden beneath the male veneer of 'respectability'. As women move through these stages, abuses come to light.
It is a long and arduous path. But worth the journey in the end.
Women, and men, have a long path ahead of them, but there are women like you who care enough and who love enough, to make the journey and to add their skills and knowledge to this work. For that I feel positive that one day women will win their revolution. Little by little it will come.
I wish you all the best and perhaps we can meet up when I am in Cairo next. You can help me help women in Upper Egypt!
Many thanks for your excellent posts Marwa.
